The night Our Lady gave us this medal.
She appeared to Sister Catherine Labouré in a Paris convent chapel, light pouring from her hands. She showed her a medal — front, then back — and asked that it be made exactly so.
“Have a medal made like this.”

Rays from her hands — graces poured out on all who ask with trust.
Our Lady upon the serpent — her obedience to God, crushing evil underfoot.
The globe beneath her feet — her queenship over Heaven and earth.
The encircling prayer — the very words that rose in gold around her.

The Cross and the “M” — Our Lady bound inseparably to her Son’s Cross.
The two Hearts — the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The flame of love — the burning love of both Hearts for every soul.
The twelve stars — the Apostles, and the whole Church around its Mother.
